The Challenge: This 3,500 sq. ft. colonial home in Salem, New Hampshire was built in 2001 and featured a traditional forced hot air system powered by propane, along with central air conditioning. Unfortunately, the system was designed with a single zone and no dampers, making it impossible to control temperatures independently between floors.

With all ductwork hidden in the walls and ceilings, reconfiguring the system wasn’t a viable option. The thermostat was located on the first floor, so the homeowners had to heat or cool the entire house—even when they only needed comfort in the upstairs bedrooms or finished attic. The result: inconsistent temperatures and high propane bills.
The Solution: After a detailed consultation, our team at New England Heat Pump Co. designed and installed a 5-zone Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heat ductless mini-split system. This energy-efficient solution provided total heating and cooling for the second floor and attic—delivering precise, room-by-room comfort without the need for ductwork changes.
To further improve efficiency, we installed a Carrier dual-fuel heat pump connected to the home’s existing ductwork. The system automatically switches between the electric heat pump and propane depending on outdoor temperatures, ensuring maximum comfort and energy savings.
